Assemble 2010:

Welcome to the User Voice for Assemble 2010, the Crafts Council’s post-election conference.

At the event, there will be a wide range of conversation sessions where we will be launching new research and discussing what this evidence means for how we should move forward as a sector.

Have your say here before the event to shape these conversations, and we’ll ensure the issues you want to discuss get talked about.

The question we are asking is:

What do we need in place that will enable the Crafts industry to fulfill its potential in the 21st century?

You can suggest your own ideas in response to the question, and can also ‘vote’ for ideas left by other people, or leave comments in response. The more votes an idea gets, the further it goes up the agenda, for discussion at Assemble. You only have 10 votes, so use them wisely!

If you have any questions about using the User Voice, get in touch by emailing reference@craftscouncil.org.uk

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

        • We need craft education to be properly recognised and valued in our secondary schools

Art & Design. Design & Technology. Where is Craft? Until craft is properly recognised as a subject it will not be valued in our schools. Without pupils truly understanding what craft has to offer, how can we expect them to choose to enter the sector?

          • Show how craft benefits other creative industries

For example architecture - lots of architects talk about the role of craft in building, but also in creating the human social capital that is needed to regenerate an area alongside the bricks and mortar part.

                          • Connect craft skills with with digital technology skills

There is a lot of interesting work trying to connect craft based expertise, techniques and materials with the use of digital technology. This mix of low-tech/high-tech allows the design and production of interactive craft products that can interact with people and the surrounding environment. There's a 'buzz' about this at the moment, capturing DIY culture and the emergence of events like Maker Faire.

                              • Craft industry - why use this outmoded Thatcherite term?

Craft & Art are not industries, rather they are professional vocations - which need to be taken seriously on their own terms of reference & maintain the funding, educational & public exposure neccessary to achieve this

                                  • understand craft (manual and digital) within sustainable agenda

craft is part of an holistic attitude that makes the most of materials adding cultural, economic and social added value -whether it be through digital or manual processes - what could be more sustainable?

                                    • Should "innovation" still be the most important quality in the craft world?

Mark Jones Director of the V&A feels the term is old and overused and means little in real terms anyway when you get to the level of a maker interacting with skill and material,. In the craft world "innovative" definitely seems to be good and "not innovative" bad and maybe "more innovative" better?
I would be interested to hear a discussion about exactly what "innovative" in a craft context is. Are Kate Malone's wonderful pots still innovative now we have all seen them? Is excellence not more important than innovation? How will we judge the next generation of craftspeople?

                                      • Recognise the wider benefits of the making process, music and sport are not only taught as vocation.

The work of the Ruskin Mill Educational Trust would be a good example. Their recent research paper "benefits of a craft based curriculum" could have much wider implications. If we recognised the broader benefits of making things within a holistic education our practical craft courses at university and within FE would not be so under threat.
